The National Green Tribunal, has asked the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority, to personally remain present before it and explain steps taken to clean, 'Radha Kund' and 'Shyam Kund', in Village Arita and prevent any discharge in them.

A bench led by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel was given a report by the Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board, which confirmed that the water in the two kund's, was unfit for consumption, on account of contamination due to discharge of sewage and domestic waste.

As per an earlier direction of the tribunal, the Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA) was to clean the said kunds and prevent discharge and submit an action taken report. However, no report was filed by the Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority.

Counsel for the pollution control board, said the Authority has been held liable to pay compensation which is in the process of being recovered.

The tribunal said "Failure of the Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority, renders its CEO liable to prosecution and payment of compensation under the provisions of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, including civil imprisonment and stopping of salary. Before taking coercive measures, we give an opportunity of being heard to the CEO."

The direction was given during the hearing of a plea filed by one Sushil Raghav. The plea will be taken up for hearing on April 15
