Development & Rule of Law becomes the theme of the first alumni meet cum conference at NLSIU

The inaugural National Conference of the alumni of National Law School of India University to discuss “Legal Services, Legal Education and the State Of The Profession: Emerging Challenges” was held at the NLSIU campus on 25- 26 April 2015. Justice .V.Gopala Gowda, judge of the Supreme Court along with former Chief Justices of India Justice M N Venkatachaliah and Justice Rajendra Babu graced the occasion by inaugurating the conference. Justice Gowda even addressed the conference by calling on lawyers to work towards meeting the challenges of development and the rule of law. “Practice of law must be focused towards delivering social, political and economic development for all”, he said.

Justice Venkatachaliah, while giving the inaugural address at the occasion, hinted at the challenges before the judicial system which should be addressed to ensure that the legal system focuses on the problem of the poor. He reminded lawyers that times are changing and the legal services and legal profession has to adapt with changing times. The world is now divided by technology not ideology. Amidst all this, honourable law minister of India, Shri D V Sadananda Gowda, who could not make it to the event conveyed his greeting to the alumni for taking up such important issues for deliberations.

Padmashri Dr. N R Madhava Menon urged the alumni to make efforts to bring in much needed reforms in the legal and judicial services. There is a great need of institutionalizing continuing legal education (CLE) and to rework the curriculum of law to address the challenges of rural areas. “Justice should reach the doorstep of the poorest and most marginalized sections,” he added. It is to be noted that the conference was jointly organized by Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT) and the NLSIU.

NLSIU Alumnus Manoj Kumar, also the founder & managing partner of Hammurabi & Solomon informed the conference of professional social responsibility (PSR) initiative of the Society of Indian Law Firms through which many of law firms have been providing pro-bono/free legal assistance to numerous organizations engaged in social activities in India such as healthcare, sanitation, women and child welfare etc. Kumar confirmed that the deliberations would be followed by substantial efforts by the alumni over the next 12 months on each of the specific issues concerning legal education, legal services and the legal profession and the alumni remains guided by their founder Padmashri Dr.Menon and a galaxy of legal luminaries and judges in this regard.
