Actress Kangana Ranaut has filed a private complaint accusing lyricist Javed Akhtar of extortion and criminal intimidation by allegedly asking her to give a written apology in her public feud with actor Hrithik Roshan in 2016.

Ranaut claimed that Akthar called her and her sister Rangoli Chandel to his house with malafide intentions and forced her to tender a written apology to Roshan by threatening her with dire consequences.

Incidentally, Ranaut appeared in the defamation case filed by Akhtar against her. However, the case was adjourned after Ranaut's counsel claimed she had no faith in the court and has sought to transfer the case.

In 2016, Roshan had filed a complaint with the Mumbai Crime Branch claiming that someone had impersonated him and sent Kangana emails.

In her criminal complaint before a Magistrate Court at Andheri, Ranaut has sought process to be issued against Akhtar under sections 383 (extortion), 384, 387 (Putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion), 503 (Criminal intimidation), 506, 509 (insult the modesty of a woman) read with sections 44 & 30 of the IPC.

"He blatantly told me that — 'by indulging in a public fight with my powerful co-star and his family', I shall be making my own life miserable because I shall be subsequently going to jail and thus will be forced to commit Suicide," Ranaut said in her Complaint.

Kangana claims Akhtar said, "if you do not say sorry to Hrithik Roshan, you will have to commit suicide because they will put you in jail. They have found all the clues, all the evidences and they know that the case is completely in their hands. You will have to commit suicide, 'kyon ke tera muh kalaa ho jayega pura, toh tu jayegi kahan' (where will you go after such vilification?)". The Accused even said that "koi bhai achhe ghar ki ladki sharam ke mare doob jayegi apni izzat bachane keliye, tujh me sharam hai to zid mar kar (any girl coming from a respectable family will not be so adamant and will apologize out of shame)."

She claims that Akhtar, in their meeting at his house, was trying to insinuate and imply that she is not of a good moral character.

"…And that my co-star (with whom I had a dispute), had a lot of evidence against me and shall use all such pieces of evidence against me, which will put my moral character to shame and tarnish my public image, thereby leading me to commit suicide," her complaint filed through Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee states.

Ranaut claims that she did not complain to the police about this earlier because of her family. However, the event had left her traumatized.

"I say that even though I had not lodged any formal complaint with any police station at the behest of my family members, the said incident had left me and my sister completely shaken and traumatized."

Connection With Akhtar's Complaint

Akhtar has accused Ranaut of damaging his "immaculate reputation" by dragging his name in actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death in her interview with Republic TV Anchor Arnab Goswami, on July 19, 2020.

In her Complaint against Akhtar, Ranaut said that she had mentioned portions of the apology meeting with Akhtar during an interview before he filed the defamation case.

"I say that it is worthy to place on record that even before filing of the defamation case against me by the Accused (on the basis of my television interview dated 19" July 2020), | and my sister had already narrated portions of the criminal acts as committed by the Accused on public platforms. The said acts as publicly discussed were being covered since 19 February 2020."

Ranaut further stated that hers is not a concocted story or a counterblast to the defamation suit.

"The facts and circumstances of the case therefore clearly suggest that the Complaint made herein is on the bases of true and correct facts and is not-a counter-blast or a concocted story. | say that the Accused has been fully aware of the truthfulness of the said claims made by me and was therefore keeping silent on the said matter since February 2020," Ranaut says in her complaint.

Akhtar's Complaint

Akhtar filed a complaint against Ranaut for offences punishable under Sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code in the MM Court, at Andheri, in November 2020 and process was issued in February 1.

Akhtar said he is a self-made man, who reached Mumbai on October 4, 1964, with Rs. 27, two pairs of clothes and a few books. He was 19 then. He accused Ranaut of defaming him in her interview on Republic TV.

In the session that lasted 57-minutes, Akhtar claims that Ranaut is seen giving her opinion on the circumstances surrounding Rajput's death without any direct personal knowledge.
