The O’Neill Institute health law LL.M. programs train lawyers to apply their specialized legal skills to improve population health in the United States and globally. The innovative full- or part-time courses of study explore the intersections of health and law, with over 40 specialized health law courses. The O’Neill Experience balances the academic and professional development needs of its students, preparing you for success in class and beyond.
Georgetown Law’s Health Law LL.M. programs are open to both foreign and U.S.-educated lawyers. Students educated outside the United States must have already completed the university portion of their legal education and received the degree required for admission to the practice of law in their country. Admission to the bar is not required.
What types of courses can I take while pursuing a Health Law LL.M.?
Students can study a wide range of courses on topics such as intellectual property rights and access to medicines, sexual reproductive health and human rights, LGBTQI health and the law, and pandemic preparedness and response. In addition, students can enroll in niche topic courses, such as:
1. Assisted Reproductive Technologies and the Law, which provides students an understanding of topical issues, such as the legal status of the IVF embryo in the context of procreative rights; embryo cryopreservation, storage, disposition and mix-ups; legal implications of advances in egg freezing, reproductive genetics and on cofertility; posthumous reproduction; egg and sperm donation; traditional/genetic and gestational surrogacy; among other key issues.
2. Health Information Technology and the Law, which provides students the opportunity to explore the legal and ethical issues at the intersection of health information, including where data comes from, how it is and should be protected, how it can be used, and risks to its integrity and security. Topical issues including health information privacy, future use of data assets, and conflicts of interest would be covered.
