Trigger Warning – Mentions of suicide, self-harm, depression.

A final year female student of HNLU, Raipur, who hails from Bihar, was found in an unconscious state in the hostel washroom by her friends on 24th August 2023 noon. She was taken to the nearby hospital immediately but was declared brought dead. The University authorities have suspended all classes till 3rd of September and have rescheduled examinations and other events in light of the unfortunate incident. Her battle with depression is considered as cause for the extreme step.

The Police are investigating into the matter, and it is speculated that the female student had died by suicide. The Vice Chancellor had conducted a condolence meeting on the evening of her passing and seemed shook by the passing of the academically gifted brilliant student.

Her close friends remember her fondly as someone who loved reading niche literature and played the ukulele. She was an articulate speaker, mooter and a brilliant student. A girl of unique personality, her creative thoughts were something which made her stand out from the crowd. She always acted as the pillar of strength for her friends and had a pure heart and soul. They remember her with utmost respect and love and said that she will live forever in their sweet memories and prays that she rests in peace. She had been battling depression for the past few months and was receiving psychological help and therapy. She is survived by her close friends and family.

The VC in his condolence address to the students, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating mental state of smart students. The speech has been unnecessarily politicized by certain youth organizations who forcefully and unlawfully entered the campus on the next day and threatened the Student Bar Association members and Administration. Due to the timely intervention of Police the miscreants were removed from the campus and protected the students.

The students and University administration have been taking all efforts to avoid the spreading of misinformation, and unnecessary politization of the unfortunate incident. They condemn the insensitive act of various media houses that published false information, and gory photos of the student. The close friends of the student wanted to clarify that their passed away friend was not facing any disciplinary actions and was not debarred from any examination or recruitment process. She was one of the top-ranking students of the batch and had done various internships under the best firms in the country. She was in good terms with her teachers and batchmates. Her depression stemmed from personal reasons and was not in furtherance of any rift with the University administration.

They hope that the privacy of the student and her family is respected at this hour, and that she be remembered respectfully and with love.

The postmortem of the student was conducted after her family arrived, and her cremation was done on 26th August 2023 in Mahadev Ghat, Raipur Chhattisgarh.
