A casual exchange which happened during a hearing in the Supreme Court indicated the difficulties which lawyers and judges face due to the late uploading of the supplementary cause-list of the Supreme Court

Since the supplementary cause-list of the Supreme Court comes late at night, the central agencies are finding it difficult to circulate the files, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta told a bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna.

The SG said this while the bench was considering the petitions filed by Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts Nalini Srihar and R.P. Ravichandran seeking premature release. Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj used to appear for the Union in a similar case filed by AG Perarivalan earlier. When the bench enquired about the presence of ASG Nataraj, SG Tushar Mehta (who was incidentally present in the court for another case), spoke about the difficulty faced in circulation of cases.

"The difficulty is that the supplementary list comes late at night. Central agency finds it difficult to circulate the docket", the SG said.

"We judges also got it at midnight!", Justice Gavai replied.
At this juncture, Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde commented in a lighter vein : "There's an English judge who said he thought slavery was abolished till he became a judge".
With a smile, Justice Gavai said, "We will not comment on that".
