The murky details of the Unnao case are harrowing for anyone with a basic sense of conscience. As horrific as the initial crime were the following acts of obfuscation and intimidation carried out by UP MLA and former BJP member Kuldeep Singh Sengar with absolute fearlessness of law.

The life sentence handed down today is a severe jolt to Sengar's sense of impunity. 

Here is a brief time line of this heinous criminal case :

June 2017

  • 4 June  - The victim-girl, who was then aged 16 years, was enticed and brought to UP MLA and then BJP member Kuldeep Singh Sengar at Makhi Village. She was raped by Sengar there (The sentence of the Delhi Court against Sengar is for this crime)
  • 11 June  - The girl was allegedly gang raped by Sengar and his brother Atul Singh and his aides (Separate trial is ongoing with respect to this case).  The victim's family lodges a missing person's complaint on the basis that the 17 - year old goes missing from her village, Mankhi in Uttar Pradesh.  
  • 21 June  - She is found in Aurraiya district in Uttar Pradesh.

July 2017

  • 3 July  - The victim wrote to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and senior police officers in the state demanding that Sengar be booked for rape.

February 2018

  • 24 February  - The victim's mother approached chief judicial magistrate to get an FIR lodged against the BJP MLA.

April 2018

  • 3 April  - The victim's father was arrested and placed in judicial custody and was beaten up on Sengar's order.
  • 8 April  - The victim tried to immolate herself in front of the residence of Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
  • 9 April  - The victim's father died in hospital of his injuries, as a result of police torture.
  • 10 April  - Atul Singh was arrested, accused of both raping the vicitm and assaulting the victim's father.
  • 12 April  - The government ordered a special investigation team to be formed for further inquiry.
  • 13 April  - Acting on a letter by a senior advocate, Allahabad HC directs immediate arrest of Sengar. CBI takes over investigation. Kuldeep Senagr was taken in by the CBI for questioning and was later arrested.
  • 14 April  - Second arrest in the case was made of Shashi Singh, who allegedly took the survivor to the BJP MLA and 'stood guard' as she was raped.

July 2018

  • 7 July   - CBI charges five people, including Sengar's brother of murdering the victim's father.
  • 11 July - The CBI files the first charge against the accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his associate Shashi Singh in the rape case.
  • 13 July - Second charge sheet was filed against accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother, three policemen and five other individuals of framing the victim's father as the culprit and his murder.

August 2018

  • 18 August  - Yunus, who was a key witness in the murder of the victim's father was found dead under suspicious circumstances.

December 2018

  • 27 December - FIR was lodged against the victim and her family allegedly submitting forged age proof to show her as a minor at the time of the incident.

July 2019

  • 4 July  - The victim's uncle was convicted in a two-decade old case of attempt to murder and was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. The case was filed by Sengar's brother, Atul Singh.
  • 12 July  - The victim and her family wrote a letter to the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi, saying that their lives were in danger because of Sengar and his men.
  • 28 July  - A truck collided with the car in which the victim, her family and their lawyer were travelling on the way to Rae Bareli. Which resulted in the death of her two aunts and the victim was airlifted to Delhi's AIIMS from King George Hospital, Lucknow following the car crash.
  • 29 July  - FIR was registered against Senger and 9 others including twenty unnamed people in connection with the accident.
  • 30 July  - SC takes suo moto cognizance of the victim's letter.

August 2019

  • 1 August  - After massive public and political outrage, the State and Centre led BJP government expelled him from the party.
  • The same day, the Supreme Court transferred five criminal cases against the victim and her family from Lucknow to Delhi and also ordered the State Government to pay her Rs. 25 lakh as interim compensation. "What is going on in this country?" , exclaimed the then CJI Gogoi, disturbed at the details of the horrific crime.

December 2019

  • 16 December  - Additional Sessions Court, Tis Hazari, Delhi finds Sengar guilty of rape.
  • 17 December  - Court adjourns the hearing on sentence of Kuldeep Singh Segar till December 20.
  • 20 December  - Court sentences Sengar to life sentence till the end of life.
