The Supreme Court on Friday confirmed its earlier order granting interim anticipatory bail to Aparna Purohit, Head of India Originals at Amazon Prime Video regarding the 2021 webshow 'Tandav'. The top court also set aside the judgment of the High Court of Allahabad which had earlier dismissed her application seeking anticipatory bail. The High Court had observed that the series caused hurt to religious sentiments.
A bench comprising of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and M. M. Sundresh noted the submission of State of Uttar Pradesh that Aparna Purohit has been cooperating in the investigation and that the interim order granting anticipatory bail may be confirmed.
Aparna Purohit had been booked for alleged commission of offences under Sections 66 (Computer-related offences), 66F (Punishment for cyber terrorism) and 67 (Transmitting obscene material) IT Act, 2008 (as amended) apart from Sections 153-A (Promoting enmity between different groups), 295 (Defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion), 505(1)(b) (Public mischief), 505(2) (Statements promoting hatred between classes), 469 (Forgery for purpose of harming reputation) of IPC.
The top court had on March 5th, 2021 had granted her protection from arrest on the condition that she would cooperate with the investigation.
