In 2025, the Supreme Court will be functioning under three Chief Justices and witness a wave of retirements- a total of seven.

The incumbent Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is set to demit office on May 13, 2025. The next in line to be the CJI is Justice BR Gavai, who will have a term till November 23. Justice Surya Kant is in line to take over the mantle after Justice Gavai's retirement as the CJI.

The Supreme Court will bid farewell to the following judges in 2025 (in chronological order).

1. Justice CT Ravikumar

Justice Ravikumar is set to retire on January 5, after a term of over three years. He was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Kerala High Court on August 31, 2021.

2. Justice Hrishikesh Roy

Justice Hrishikesh Roy will retire on January 31, after a term of over four years. Originally hailing from Gauhati High Court, Justice Roy was elevated from the Kerala High Court - where he was the Chief Justice - on September 23, 2019.

3. CJI Sanjiv Khanna

Chief Justice of India Sanijv Khanna will retire on May 13. He was elevated from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019 and was appointed as the CJI on November 11, 2024.

4. Justice Abhay Sreeniwas Oka

Justice Oka is set to retire on May 24, after a term of over three years. He was a judge of the Bombay High Court and was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in 2019. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021.

5. Justice Bela Trivedi

Justice Bela Trivedi will retire on June 9. She was elevated from the Gujarat High Court on August 31, 2021.

6. Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia

Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia will retire on August 9. He was a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court before his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in January 2021. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 9, 2022.

7. Justice BR Gavai

Justice BR Gavai will retire on November 23. He was elevated from the Bombay High Court on May 24, 2019.
