The Supreme Court on Tuesday (January 2) dismissed an appeal filed by the Delhi Police against the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that denied them permission to construct the temporary quarters for personnel over the banks of the Yamuna river.

A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan didn't accept the arguments of the appellant that the NGT had erred in denying the permission.

The bench said that construction cannot be allowed over the banks of Yamuna and that Steps should be taken to protect the environment. Justice Oka recalled the floods which occurred last year when the river waters reached near the Supreme Court premises too.
