Supreme Court Passes Divorce Decrees Through Virtual Hearing [Read Orders]

The Supreme Court has passed several orders, granting divorce by mutual consent through the virtual hearing system.
On June 3, 2020, the bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy, in exercise of its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution of India, passed the decree for dissolution of marriage by mutual consent in the case titled Anisha Arjun Raj v. Arjun Sundar Raj.
The Petitioner-wife in the said case had approached the Top Court through Advocate Swati Bansal, seeking transfer of divorce petition filed by the Respondent-husband in the Court of II Additional Principal Judge, Family Court at Bangalore, Karnataka to the Court of Principal Judge, Family Court, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
The matter was however referred to the High Court Mediation Centre at Chennai by an order dated August 30, 2019 pursuant to which the parties reached to an amicable settlement and sought dissolution of their marriage in terms of the settlement deed.
When the matter was taken up by Justice Roy on June 3, the Court disposed of the transfer petition, while recording the terms of settlement.
Following suit, Justice S. Ravindra Bhat passed a decree for divorce by mutual consent under Section 13(b) of the the Hindu Marriage Act, vide order dated June 11, 2020, in the case titled Anushweta Kumari v. Sanjeet Kumar Agarwal.
Similarly, in the case of Madhuri Jajoo v. Manoj Jajoo, Justice V. Ramasubramanian granted divorce, after the parties submitted the deed of settlement.
Both the Petitioner and the Respondent were present during the course of hearing via video conferencing on June 13, 2020. The court allowed their application, are the Supreme Court Mediation Centre forwarded the settlement agreement to the court.
Significantly, the Top Court completed 57 days of virtual hearings yesterday, i.e. June 19, 2020. The Court has now reached a milestone of hearing a total of 7144 cases.
As per the information available on the Supreme Court website, a total of 618 benches have heard 6994 cases (including review petitions), in addition to 150 matters that were heard by the Registrar Court.
During this period, the Supreme Court delivered 672 Judgments in 134 main matters and 538 connected matters).
