Cases are to be listed within a reasonable time after filing, the Supreme Court observed while suggesting the Orissa High Court to adopt the procedure of auto-listing of the matters.

The bench comprising of Justice MR Shah and Krishna Murari observed thus while disposing a writ petition filed by a litigant who alleged that a writ petition filed by him, is pending in the Orissa High Court and not being listed for hearing and the same is adjourned.

"It cannot be disputed that the matters which are filed are required to be heard at the earliest and the same are to be listed within a reasonable time after filing.", the bench observed.

The court did not pass any order in the writ petition but directed the Registry to send a copy of this petition to the Registrar General of the Orissa High Court, which will be placed before Chief Justice of the High Court.

"We request the Chief Justice of the High Court to look into the aspect of the listing of the matters urgently and at the earliest. The High Court may also adopt the procedure of auto-listing of the matters so that after filing of a matter, the same is listed before the concerned Court at the earliest and preferably within a period of 7-10 days automatically. These are only suggestions, which may be considered by the High Court so that the matters which are filed are listed before the concerned Court at the earliest.", the order reads.
