Supreme Court lawyer and human rights defender Ehtesham Hashmi passed away today morning due to a heart attack. Hashmi was known for taking up several human rights causes.

In 2021, he lead a team which published a fact-finding report about the communal violence in Tripura which shook the state. The Tripura police booked him under the UAPA over the publication of the report. Later, the Supreme Court ordered that no coercive steps including arrest should be taken against him.

He had also filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition in the Supreme Court seeking to declare internet shutdowns as "unconstitutional, illegal and unenforceable". The petition sought to put a stop to arbitrary internet shutdowns in India, particularly in the backdrop of anti-CAA protests.

Several lawyers, journalists and activists expressed condolences in social media on his passing away.
