Judge of the Supreme Court Justice Dinesh Maheswari speaking at the farewell function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on the occasion of his retirement said “A judge doesn’t stand for the plaintiff or the defendant or the complainant or the accused. Just look at the cause and nothing else. Nothing else matters for a judge.”

Justice Dinesh Maheshwari served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India for 4 years prior to which he served as the Chief Justice of High Court of Karnataka and High Court of Meghalaya.

In his farewell speech Justice Maheshwari while quoting the lines "insaaf humein bete se zyada azeez hai" from the movie Mughal-e-Azam said “Friends, this is what we are. Insaff, justice is dearer to a judge than anything else, this is what the system has always been, you are the contributors of that system.”

Justice Maheshwari described his tenure as a Supreme Court judge as ‘wonderful journey’ and a ‘great learning experience’. “I place myself only as one of the workers of this great institution. We as judges are transit tourists. Judges come judges go, the institution keeps marching ahead...”, he said.

Remarking that it is not the time served as a judge that matters, but the quality of service rendered, Justice Maheshwari said “We are all bound by the constitution, tenure is also fixed. I am not going to say whether it should be more or less. It is not the time that matters, it is the life in the time that matters.”

Justice Maheshwari expressed his gratitude to the registry, his staff, his colleague judges, members of the bar and his family. “As a humble servant of the constitution, I have tried to contribute to strengthening this institution and marching ahead of this Nation, for which we all strive for together.”

Speaking at the farewell function, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud appreciated Justice Maheshwari’s commitment to ensuring that justice is accessible to all. CJI Chandrachud described him as a proponent of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and said that Justice Maheshwari’s contributions as a judge have streamlined the legal system.

The CJI greatly appreciated Justice Maheshwari for taking time out to always mentor the younger generation of lawyers “As we rise in ranks many of us often tend to forget to mentor the next generation. But stories from the juniors and staff of Justice Maheswari reminds us that one is never too busy or senior to find time to contribute to the development of the coming generation of lawyers.
