The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Union of India to fill a pending vacancy in the National Commission for Scheduled Caste. The direction was passed in a plea which had sought for vacancies to be filled in the Commission in 2017.

The matter was listed before a bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala

The court noted that the vacancies that existed in the earlier commission had already been filled. However, vacancies still existed in the 6th National Commission for Scheduled Castes. The Union of India informed the bench that the vacancies for Chairperson, Vice chairperson, and two members of the Commission had already been filled and there was only one vacancy that still existed.

CJI Chandrachud, while dictating the order, remarked–

"For the 6th commission, Union of India filed an affidavit stating that the Chairperson, Vice chairperson, and two members are already in place but one vacancy still exists. Union of India to ensure that it the vacancy is filled expeditiously."
