The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended to elevate Advocate Arun Kumar as a Judge of the Allahabad High Court.
The Collegium disclosed that the High Court Collegium's recommendation in this regard was earlier deferred by it, in view of certain IB reports. However, since the Bureau has no "verifiable material" with respect to the objections, the Collegium resolved to recommend his name to the Centre.
The Collegium also noted that Kumar has 25 years of practice at the Bar and has experience of conducting wide range of cases before the High Court in constitution, civil and revenue jurisdiction. Moreover, three consultee-judges had positively opined about his suitability.
A statement issued in this regard states,
"On 03 May 2023, the Department of Justice forwarded to the Supreme Court a report dated 01 February 2023 of the Intelligence Bureau stating that they do not have any additional inputs in addition to the earlier inputs. Having regard to the above aspects and bearing in mind that the Intelligence Bureau has no additional / specific inputs or verifiable material, the Collegium is of the considered opinion that the candidate is eminently fit and suitable for appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad."
