The States of Assam, Tripura and Punjab informed the Supreme Court that they have decided to cancel the physical exams proposed by their respective boards for Class 12 in view of the COVID-19 situation.

State of Andhra Pradesh is now the only state government which has not taken a decision on cancellation of Class 12 exams.

The standing counsel of Andhra Pradesh, Advocate Mahfooz Nazki, told the Supreme Court that the state government wants to conduct the physical exams as a matter of policy.

A vacation bench comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari adjourned the further hearing on the pleas relating to state board exams to tomorrow 2 PM.

The bench also asked the standing counsel of State of Kerala, Advocate G Prakash, to get instructions by tomorrow on the decision of the state board to go ahead with physical exams for Class 11.

"Take instructions by tomorrow, or we will pass orders", the bench told him.

The bench also asked the other state governments to put on affidavit the decisions taken by them.

Last week, the bench had noted "out of 28 states, 6 states have already conducted examination, 18 states have cancelled it, but 4 states (Assam, Punjab, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh) have not cancelled the examination as of now". The bench had directed the copy of the petition to be served on the standing counsels of the 4 states which are yet to cancel the board exams for Class XII.

Also, noting that State of Kerala has not cancelled the state board exams for Class XI, the bench had directed the service of notice on the Kerala Government's counsel.

The Bench was hearing the PIL filed by child rights activist Anubha Srivastava seeking cancellation of physical examinations. Several students have also intervened in the petition seeking cancellation.
