The Supreme Court of India has noted the submissions put forward by the Central Government regarding the implementation of measures to prevent black marketing of sanitizers and mask and has directed for proper adherence of the same in wake of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
Petition had been filed by Justice of Rights Foundation seeking intervention of the Court to ensure sale of masks and sanitizers was at reasonable prices to the public at large. The petition also sought for fair and equitable distribution of masks and other essential commodities.
Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta submitted to the Court that surgical/N95 masks had been declared as essential goods and that steps were being taken by the Government of India to issue directions regarding the availability and distribution of the masks, hand sanitizers and liquid soaps at their minimum retail prices fixed by the Government.
He also submitted that there is a helpline provided at the control rooms which are working round the clock responding to complaints by persons who are not able to secure the essential commodities at the prices fixed by the Government.
Accordingly, a Bench comprising of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and Deepak Gupta directed the Government of India to address the complaints properly, and with that direction, the petition was disposed of.
