Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal on Thursday (May 9) filed nomination to contest for the post of the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association for the 2024-25 term.
The SCBA elections are scheduled to take place on May 16. Sibal was previously elected as the SCBA President three times, the last instance twenty-three years ago in 2001. Before that, he was President during the 1995-96 and 1997-98 terms.
The incumbent SCBA President is Senior Advocate Dr. Adish C Aggarwala. Today is the last date for filing nominations.
Last week, the Supreme Court passed an order for the implementation of a minimum 1/3rd women's reservation in the posts of the Executive Committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association. The SCBA Exective Committee objected to this order, terming it as an interference with the independence of the bar. Later, the Court clarified that women's reservation will be on an experimental basis.
