Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna today (November 27) suggested that lawyers send letters in advance with requests for withdrawal of cases instead of making oral submissions when the matter is taken up.

During the morning session, the Counsel appearing in a case of transfer of a family matter informed that the parties have settled their issues and now seek to withdraw the transfer petition. Allowing the withdrawal, the CJI verbally said :

"If you have any such requests, you can always give a letter to the Court Master, one day in advance or two days in advance. That will help us resolve the matter or not read the files. Whenever you have a request for withdrawal you can always submit it."

Yesterday, the CJI, while speaking at the Constitution Day Function, said that the requests made by lawyers to reinstate the previous system of adjournment letters' circulation cannot be accepted.
