The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to take up on Friday the Centre's plea for transfer of all petitions filed in the different High Courts challenging the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act to the apex court.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta mentioned the matter before CJI Bobde saying that the various High Court may take contrasting views of the matter. The SG also said that the apex court has already been moved in over 60 PILs against the CAA.
It was pointed out that the Karnataka High Court had on Tuesday posted for hearing the petitions before it challenging the constitutionality of the CAA, citing that there is no order by the top court barring high courts from taking up the matter.
The Chief Justice's bench had on December 18 issued notices on a string of petitions challenging its validity to be heard in the third week of January.
