The Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking for the constitution of a "Special Purpose Fund" for NRIs and emigrant workers who are under severe financial distress as a result of lack of means of healthcare and welfare amenities due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Filed on behalf of Kerala Pravasi Sangham by Advocate-on-Record Deepak Prakash, the plea stated that a "Special Purpose Fund" should be constituted, wherein 15% of the amount received as foreign remittance from NRIs and emigrant workers should be utilized specifically for providing better healthcare and sustenance facilities to all citizens either residing in India or abroad.
On that note, the Petitioner had approached the Court to ensure formulation of certain guidelines and to respect the sentiments of the citizens of the country who were diligently working outside the country to bring in money for its betterment and upliftment.
The Bench comprising of Justices Ashok Bhushan, SK Kaul and BR Gavai was not inclined to entertain the matter and dismissed the same.
