The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala has been closed down till further orders after a student protest erupted over allegations of Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) Jai Shankar Singh entering the girl's hostel and rooms of female students to conduct a surprise check, even after apprehensions expressed by several female students.

A letter from the protesting students stated that "entering their rooms despite clear apprehensions expressed by the female students is a complete disregard for their consent shown by the Vice Chancellor of the University, and that the Vice-Chancellor made certain comments on the clothing of female students and no student of the university would tolerate such comments on the clothing of women.”

It was further stated that whilst the student's parents are not allowed to enter the rooms or even the hostel premises by the university administration, there was no occasion for the VC to unauthorisedly enter the living space of the female students without prior notice.

Reportedly, the registrar of the University had constituted a committee to look into the grievances raised by the students, but after no student turned up for talks, the University was closed until further orders since students were not attending classes.

The students have expressed a clear and unequivocal demand for the resignation of the VC, and have stated that the present protest was the culmination of a spate of untoward remarks made by the VC.
