RG Kar Rape-Murder: Calcutta High Court Calls For CBI's Report On "Very Nasty Comments" About Victim Written On Social Media

The Calcutta High Court has called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit its report regarding certain comments which were written on social media pertaining to the victim in the brutal RG Kar rape-murder case involving a trainee doctor who was raped and killed in the hospital premises.

A division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya orally observed:

"CBI has taken over the investigation. You [CBI] see if something can be done. There are some very nasty comments written under the picture of the victim. We will ask for ASG to be served copies [of the plea]. CBI can examine it. We will list the matter on 18th September."

The plea was raised before the court by a counsel who claimed that there were some very objectionable comments being made on social media under the picture of the victim which was being shared before both the High Court and Supreme Court directed for the same to be stopped.

Counsel claimed that these comments were being made by handles who could not even be traced or proven to be real individuals. Counsel sought that the Kolkata Police Cyber Cell be directed to look into these comments and trace their origins. 

However, the court stated that since the CBI had taken over the investigation, they would be competent to deal with the grievances raised by the petitioner. At this stage, the Additional Solicitor General informed the court that the CBI did not have any separate cyber cell and thus the state police also be directed to submit a report.

The bench however maintained that the report would have to be filed by the CBI and they could solicit cooperation from the state police's cyber cell as and when necessary in compiling their report.

With these observations, the bench adjourned the case.
