The Delhi Government has told the Supreme Court in an affidavit that it is ready to take measures like complete lockdown to control the air pollution in the national capital.
However, such measure will be effective only lockdown is imposed in National Capital Region areas across neighboring states, the Delhi Government added.
The affidavit was filed in the writ petition Aditya Dubey versus Union of India and others, which seek measures to control the worsening air quality situation in Delhi.
On Saturday, a Special Bench led by the Chief Justice of India had expressed deep concerns at the situation, and had called for emergency steps. The Bench had also suggested that lockdown could be imposed to prevent the situation from going out of control.
Agreeing to the Supreme Court suggestion, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has said in the affidavit :
"GNCTD is ready to take steps like complete lock down to control the local emissions. However, such a step would be meaningful if it is implemented across the NCR areas in neighboring states. Given Delhi's compact size, a lock down would have limited impact on the air quality regime. This issue would need to be addressed at the level of airshed involving NCR areas. In view of the above we are ready to consider this step if the same is mandated for the entire NCR areas by the Government of India or by the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas"
The Court will hear the case today.
