The Supreme Court will hear today the plea filed by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind against the demolition actions carried out by authorities in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly as a punitive measure against persons accused of rioting during protests held in Kanpur and Prayagraj against remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

A vacation bench of Justices CT Ravikumar and Sudhanshu Dhulia will hear the matter.

The UP Government, in its counter-affidavit filed in the case, denied that the demolitions were linked to rioting and stated that they were carried out for violations of building rules and that due process of law, including service of notice, was followed.
