The Supreme Court on Friday (January 10) directed the Tree Authority of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation not to grant tree felling permission within the Aarey colony area without the court's permission.

A bench comprising Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Aravind Kumar passed the order.

The Court will hear pleas challenging the felling of trees in Aarey forest for the construction of a metro car shed on March 5, 2025.

The Court was informed today by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited that there is no proposal pending for cutting of more trees in the area.

In November 2022, the Court had refused the decision of the Maharashtra Government to allow metro car shed at the Aarey area and allowed the MMRCL to pursue applications seeking permission to cut trees.  In April 2023, the Court imposed a cost of Rs 10 lakhs on MMRCL for seeking to cut 177 trees despite the Court giving permission for 84 trees.
