New chief justices have been appointed in the High Courts of Bombay and Andhra Pradesh. The President of India has, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has made the following appointments:

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya has been appointed as the Chief Justice Of the Bombay High Court

Supreme Court Collegium on July 5 recommended the appointment of Justice Devendra Upadhyaya of the Allahabad High Court as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

The collegium noted that Justice Upadhyaya has acquired eleven years of experience in dispensing justice, and his appointment will provide a representation of the Allahabad HC among the Chief Justices.

The recommendation was made as the retirement of former Chief Justice of the Bombay HC Justice RD Dhanuka created a vacancy on May 30, 2023. Currently, Justice Nitin Jamdar is the Acting Chief Justice of the Court.

Justice Upadhyaya was elevated as a judge of the Allahabad HC on November 21, 2011.

Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur has been appointed as the Chief Justice Of the Andhra Pradesh High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium on July 5 recommended the name of Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, Judge, Bombay High Court for appointment as the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

The Office of the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court fell vacant on May 19, upon the elevation of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra to the Supreme Court.

Justice Thakur was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir on March 8, 2013, and is now the senior-most Judge in his parent High Court. He was transferred to the Bombay High Court in June 2022.

The Supreme Court Collegium on February 9 had recommended Justice Thakur’s name for elevation as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court which has been pending with the Government.

The Collegium noted that Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

It added that on the appointment of Justice Thakur, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court would get representation amongst the Chief Justices of the High Courts.
