Mumbai Court Sentences Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut To 15 Days Jail In Defamation Case By BJP Leader Kirit Somaiya's Wife

The Mazgaon Metropolitan Court in Mumbai on Thursday convicted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and sentenced him to 15 days jail term for defaming BJP leader and former MLA Kirit Somaiya and his wife Medha Somaiya.

The Court has also ordered Raut to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to the complainant - Medha Somaiya, the wife of the BJP leader.

According to the complaint filed by Medha in 2022, Raut had accused her husband of being involved in a Rs 100 crore scam pertaining to the construction of some toilets in the jurisdiction of Mira-Bhayandar, the twin-city near Mumbai.

Confirming the development, advocate Vivekananda Gupta for Somaiya, said, "We had filed a complaint under section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court today, after going through the material placed on record, as convicted Raut and sentenced him to 15 days jail. He has also been asked to pay Rs 25,000 after the expiry of appeal period."
