Introduction:In 2020, the Government of India embarked on an ambitious exercise of reforming the Criminal Justice System. On 11th August 2023, three bills titled Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023, seeking to repeal and replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act (IEA), 1872, respectively, were introduced in the Parliament. These laws came into force on 1st July, 2024.
The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) aims to reform procedural laws to ensure efficiency, transparency, and accountability in law enforcement while safeguarding citizen rights. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) seeks to align criminal laws with contemporary societal needs, delivering justice more effectively and efficiently.
This course provides a comprehensive understanding of BNSS and BNS, equipping participants with theoretical knowledge, practical insights, and an in-depth analysis of their legislative structure, key provisions, and implications within the broader criminal justice framework.
About the Course Instructors:
- BNSS INSTRUCTOR:
Justice K. Abraham Mathew
Justice Mathew, Former Judge of the High Court of Kerala, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Live Law Academy. A distinguished alumnus of Law College, Thane (University of Bombay), Justice Mathew embarked on his judicial career in 1988 as a Munsiff-Magistrate. Over three decades, he held key positions, including Director of the Kerala Judicial Academy, Registrar (Vigilance) of the High Court of Kerala, and District & Sessions Judge.
In 2014, he was sworn in as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Kerala and later became a Permanent Judge in 2016, serving with distinction until his retirement in January 2019. As an Honorary Professor at Live Law Academy, Justice Mathew has graciously consented to teach the Code of Criminal Procedure (Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita) and the Law of Evidence (Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam), providing students with unparalleled insights into these critical areas of law.

Ms. Vishalakshi is an accomplished legal educator specializing in criminal law, with over nine years of teaching experience. A graduate of ILS Law College, Pune, and a UGC-NET-qualified academic, she earned her LL.M. with distinction in Criminal Law and Administration from Nagpur University.With her extensive experience in mentoring judiciary aspirants, Ms. Sathianathan brings a focused approach to preparing students for the complexities of the judicial services examinations. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. on the status of the mentally ill in the criminal justice system, she combines academic expertise with practical insights to deliver impactful and exam-oriented guidance to aspiring judges.
