The Supreme Court to hear today at 10.30 AM the suo motu case taken over the rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata.
A bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the matter.
The suo motu case titled "In Re : Alleged Rape and Murder of Trainee Doctor in RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata and related issues" was registered on August 18.
The Calcutta High Court on August 13 transferred the investigation to the CBI after expressing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police,
Several associations of doctors and medical consultants have intervened in the suo motu case submitting their suggestions to enhance the security for medical professionals.

CJI: any additional complaints by the doctors in regard to their safety shall be emailed to the registrar general of this court for necessary directions
CJI: accordingly we are assured by SG Tushar Mehta that CISF shall be deputed in sufficient strength to guard the facilities at RG Medical college including the hostels where the resident doctors are staying
CJI: it is essential to create safe conditions for the doctors so as to return to their duties. So that they not only pursue their medical education but also administer medical care.
CJI: The Court is apprised that there are approximately 700 resident doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Following the incident on night of 15 August 2024, most of the doctors have left the place
CJI: as a consequence of which approximately 30-40 female doctors and 60-70 male doctors only remain in the hostels

CJI: On the night of 15 August 2024, when the acts of vandalisation of the premises of the RG Kar Hospital took place, a mob of persons is alleged to have systematically attacked the male and female doctors
Counsel: 30-40 female residents and 60-70 male residents remain and rest have all fled.
Counsel for women doctors: there are 700 residents, 550 have gone, only 250 are there now (in the hostel)
SG: let that person who has made the complaint at 22 hours be given special security by CISF
