Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti took oath as judges of the Supreme Court today. With their appointments, the Supreme Court's strength rose to 32 with two more vacancies remaining.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath to the new judges, whose appointments were cleared by the Central Government on July 12 following the recommendations made by the Supreme Court collegium on July 5.

At the Supreme Court, Justice Bhuyan (previously the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court) will have a term till August 2, 2029 and Justice Bhatti(previously the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court) till May 6, 2027.



Justice Ujjal Bhuyan was appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court on 17 October 2011. He is currently the senior-most judge of his parent High Court and is served as  theChief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana since 28 June 2022.  

Justice S V Bhatti was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 12 April 2013 and is the seniormost in his parent High Court. He was transferred to the High Court of Kerala in March 2019 and served as its Chief Justice  since 01 June 2023.
