The Central government has notified the appointment of Justice BR Sarangi as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.
Significantly, the Centre's notification comes almost 6 months after the Supreme Court Collegium proposed Justice Sarangi's elevation. He is now set to retire in less than a month on July 20.
He is currently the senior most Judge of the Orissa High Court and will fill the post of CJ which was lying vacant since December 28, 2023, subsequent to retirement of former Chief Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra. Justice Shree Chandrashekhar had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice since then.
Justice BR Sarangi began his legal career in December 1985, practicing in the Orissa High Court and the Supreme Court of India. He handled cases across various branches of law, including civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, tax, labour, service, mining, education, electricity, insurance, banking, telephone, elections etc.
In 2002, then Chief Justice of Orissa High Court conferred the Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award with a Gold Medal on Justice Sarangi for “outstanding performance and high standard of professional ethics as a lawyer”.
Over his 27-year practice, Justice Sarangi appeared before numerous judicial bodies and was appointed as Arbitrator, Advocate Commission, and Amicus Curiae in many cases. He was elevated to the bench on June 20, 2013, as a Permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court. Justice Sarangi has disposed of over 1,52,000 cases and delivered nearly 1,500 reported judgments.
