Justice BR Gavai Visits Nagpur Central Prison, Inspects Facilities; Stresses On Prisoners' Rehabilitation

Supreme Court Judge Justice BR Gavai, Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), visited Nagpur Central Jail recently and inspected the facilities there.

During his visit, Justice Gavai interacted with seven children of women inmates, listening to their stories and offering words of motivation. He emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and societal reintegration for prisoners, pledging support for their education, skill development, and welfare.

Justice Gavai conducted a detailed inspection of the jail's infrastructure and facilities, including:

Prison Cafeteria: Inspected the quality of meals served to inmates.

Women's Ward: Reviewed living conditions and interacted with women inmates.

Skill Development Center: Praised the products made by inmates and encouraged skill-building initiatives.

Legal Aid Center: Assessed the operations of the center established by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Nagpur, which provides free legal aid to undertrial and convicted inmates.

Video Conferencing Room: Evaluated its usage for legal and administrative purposes.

Justice Gavai highlighted the need for addressing vacancies, enhancing infrastructure, and improving amenities within the prison system to ensure a humane and rehabilitative environment.

Justice Gavai also participated in a tree plantation drive within the jail premises, symbolizing growth and renewal.

Justice Gavai was joined by Justice V.R. Ghuge, Judge of the Bombay High Court, and Justice Nitin Sambre, Administrative Judge of the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.
