On Monday, nine new judges took oath as judges of the Rajasthan High Court. One of them is Dr. Nupur Bhati, wife of Justice Pushpendra Bhati, who has been a sitting judge of the same High Court since 2016.

However, this is not the first time in the history of the Rajasthan High Court that a husband-wife duo will be sitting at the Bench. In June, 2022, when Justice Shubha Mehta took oath as a judge the Rajasthan High Court had its first husband-wife duo serving as judges of the High Court. Justice Shubha Mehta is married to Justice Mahendra Kumar Goyal, who was elevated to the Bench in November, 2019.

It appears that this is a first that two husband-wife duos are serving as Judges in the same High Court.

Justice Pushpendra Bhati is the brother of Senior Advocate Aishwarya Bhati, who is an Additional Solicitor General of India representing the Central Government in many matters before the Supreme Court.

The Rajasthan High Court has a total sanctioned strength of 50 Judges, which includes 38 permanent judges and 12 additional judges. Post the latest appointments, there are now 35 sitting judges at the High Court.

In December 2020, a husband-wife duo had taken oath on the same day as judges of the Madras High Court.  In 2019, a husband-wife duo were sworn in as judges on the same day in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. They are Justices Vivek Puri and Archana Puri.

A similar instance of husband-wife duo being sworn in together as HC judges happened before in 2009 in Delhi High Court, when Justices A K Pathak and Indermeet Kaur were appointed.
