With three women judges sworn-in on Tuesday, the Supreme Court has four sitting women judges, the highest ever in its history. The previous high was three sitting women judges, during the period from August 2018 to May 2020 when Justices R Banumathi, Indira Banerjee and Indu Malhotra were serving.

Newly appointed Justices Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna and Bela M Trivedi and Justice Indira Banerjee (appointed in 2018) are the women judges in the Supreme Court now.

On the first day, Justice Hima Kohli shared the bench with Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah. Justice BV Nagarathna shared the bench with Justice L Nageswara Rao and Aniruddha Bose. Justice Bela Trivedi shared the bench along with Justices Indira Banerjee and V Ramasubramanian.

It took almost four decades for the Supreme Court after its establishment to have its first woman judge, with the appointment of Justice Fatima Beevi in October 1980.

Justice Beevi was followed by Justices Sujata V Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra, Ranjana Prakash Desai, R Bhanumathi, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee.

Although the Supreme Court has now the highest ever women representation, the question still remains : is 4 out of 33 an adequate representation?
