Former Supreme Court Judge Madan Lokur Appointed As United Nations Internal Justice Council Chairperson

The Secretary-General of the United Nations has appointed former Supreme Court Judge Madan B Lokur as the Chairperson of the UN Internal Justice Council.

The appointment is till November 12, 2028. In a letter addressed to Justice Lokur, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his congratulations on the appointment to the Council, which was termed as a "key pillar of the administration of justice at the United Nations."

Justice Lokur has confirmed the appointment. The Council also has members from Uruguay, Australia, Austria, Brazil and the United States of America.

Justice Lokur became a judge of the Supreme Court of India on June 4, 2012, and demitted office on December 31 2018. He was Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and the Andhra Pradesh High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court.

After his retirement, Justice Lokur was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji in August 2019 which was the first time an Indian judge got appointed as the judge of the apex court of another country.

Justice Lokur also remains an active public voice on civil liberty issues and judicial independence.
