Supreme Court Bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian starts hearing the matter concerning the ongoing farmers protests against the farm laws. An application had been filed by the Delhi Police seeking directions to prevent farmers march in the form of tractor march on the Republic Day.
A plea has also been filed by Bhartiya Kisan Union Lokshakti, seeking removal of all the three members who are presently part of the committee appointed by the Court to initiate talks with protesting farmers.
Matter over adjourned.
AG : I believe Bhushan. But police will take a call on this.
CJI : We trust Mr.Bhushan's statement that his clients want to do it peacefully.
Attorney General : 5000 tractors coming into the city cannot be possibly maintained by the roads in the city. They will go all over the city.
CJI : Mr AG, you ask the authorities and the unions how it is going to be peaceful. These are matters purely in the domain of executive.
Bhushan : I have been counselling them to maintain peace. Even on the republic day, they propose to do it peacefully to celebrate republic day. They have issued a call that there should be absolute peace.
Bhushan : Suppose your lordships later withdraw the interim order on the opinion that the laws are valid, what will happen?
CJI : We are requesting you to advise them to change their attitude and counsel them.
Bhushan : The agitation is a way of putting democratic pressure on the government. What they fear is that if they get up and leave on the basis that the Court has stayed the laws, the pressure on the government will go away.
Bhushan says that the unions are "totally convinced" that the laws need to be repealed and so they don't want to discuss amendments.
Laws were passed without discussions and without even voting in Rajya Sabha, Bhushan understand.
CJI asks Prashant Bhushan what solution can be found for the problem.
CJI to Bhushan : We are calling upon you to counsel your clients in such a way to bring peace. We want a resolution of the dispute.
One lawyer seeks for a direction that the Committee should travel to south, east regions of the country to listen to grievances.
CJI : Why should they do that? Anyway, we will see later.
