A Delhi Court on Tuesday granted custody parole to Engineer Rashid, who defeated former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, in order to permit him to take oath as a member of Parliament.

Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh of Patiala House Courts passed the order after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) gave consent to allow Rashid to take the oath on July 05.

While NIA did not oppose Rashid's interim bail plea, it said that some restrictions must be imposed on him like not speaking or interacting with the media.

While granting him custody parole, the court clarified Rashid shall not have access to any phone and will not interact with anyone except authority. 

The court also said that Rashid will not speak to media. It added that while the presence of his family members is allowed but he is not permitted to click photographs of the ceremony or post it on social media in any form.

As per the order, Rashid will also not have access to internet.

Rashid has won by a margin of over two lakh votes from Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency.

Rashid has been in jail since 2019 after he was charged by NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in alleged terror funding case. He is presently lodged in Tihar jail.
