The Chief Justice of India, Dr. DY Chandrachud on Saturday (January 6) delivered a presidential address at the event for the inauguration of the new district court complex at Rajkot in Gujarat and the launching of Nayaya Mandir and E-initiatives.

In his address, he emphasised the indispensable position of changing times and the need for young lawyers to adapt to technology. He highlighted a developed court infrastructure's impact on making justice delivery efficient for judges, lawyers and litigants.

“The consolidation of 50 courtrooms in the building ensures enhancing accessibility for both lawyers and litigants in Rajkot. In this era marked by rapid changes, it is imperative to adapt ... lawyers should be truly trained in the use of technology, and lawyers should not separated from the use of technology. This new district court building serves as a shining example not just for the legal community but communities at large..may this institution of justice continue to evolve ensuring that justice is not just delivered but experienced by all with dignity, respect and ease.”

Commending the authorities of the Rajkot District Court, the CJI stressed the positive impact of women-friendly infrastructures enabling female lawyers to pursue their careers without compromising on their domestic duties and motherhood.

“I would like to emphasise the addition of amenities like the canteen, a creche room, and extensive washrooms for ladies and differently-abled on each floor. The presence of a creche room is commendable recognising that childbearing and child care are significant life choices for young women. Having separate bathrooms for young women lawyers defines the social progress of the judiciary for the future”

The CJI expressed that since it is the district court which is the first court of instance for aggrieved litigants, the district court lawyers have the responsibility to ensure that the “Dhwaja of Justice will keep flying in the generations to come”. He explained how in the morning while observing the dhwaja (flag) at Dwarkadish Temple, he felt inspired by the special purpose it signifies. He called the special purpose to be humanity as governed by the rule of law and the constitution of India.

Remarking that the new building of the Rajkot District in Gujarat serves as a model not just for district courts across the country but also all the High Courts as well as the Supreme Court, Justice Chandrachud said that the Apex Court would soon be equipped with a futuristic building with state of the art facilities.

“The Supreme Court is about to launch the construction of a new futuristic SC building itself, 27 new Courtrooms, futuristic Courtrooms embodying the latest technology and all facilities for the bar and every stakeholder including the litigants. The Rajkot district court I dare say is not only a model for the district courts across India but for the HCs as well as the Supreme Court.”

He concluded his speech by reminding the audience that the essence of justice is not just of deliverance but of being experienced by all with dignity, respect and ease.
