The Supreme Court Bar Association has announced a 'General Assistance Scheme 2021' to support the bereaved and financially unstable families of such lawyers who pass away at an early age.

The assistance will also be extended to such members who are financially constrained and undergo surgery or are treated for critical illness. Eligible members may send their application to: scbageneralassistance2021@gmail.com. 

The Association has also announced a 'Covid-19 Financial Assistance Scheme 2021' to support its members who are suffering financially due to the pandemic.

It has resolved to grant one-time ex-gratia financial assistance to its members from the generous and voluntary donations made by members of the SCBA for this purpose. Eligible members may send their application to: scbafinancialassistance2021@gmail.com.

General Assistance

Under the General Assistance Scheme, the Executive Committee of the SCBA has announced the following modalities for financial aid:

In case of Death:

  • An ex-gratia sum of Rs. 5,00,000/- Lakh to the family member whose age at the time of death was less than 50 years.
  • An ex-gratia sum of Rs. 2,50,000/- to the family of member whose age at the time of death was more than 50 years but less than 65 years.
  • An ex-gratia sum of Rs. 1,00,000/- to the family of member whose age at the time of death was 65 years or more.

The amount shall be paid to the spouse/ legal heir of the deceased member if the member so deceased had taxable income of less than 10 Lacs in the last Assessment Year.

[The scheme shall be available for families of such member who expired after March 1, 2021]

In case of Hospitalization:

  • Any member who has been hospitalised on account of critical illness or surgery shall be eligible for 50% of the bill amount subject to a maximum of Rs. 1,00,000/-.

However, in case such member has availed any insurance policy and received reimbursement, the amount so approved shall not exceed the total amount spent by the member on account of critical illness or surgery.

[The scheme shall be available for such member who have been diagnosed with critical illness or have undergone surgery after March 1, 2021]

The benefit will be made available to such member who had taxable income of less than 10 Lacs in the last Assessment Year.

[This scheme will come to an end once the Term Health Insurance Policy is taken by the SCBA for its members.]

Financial Assistance

Under the Financial Assistance Scheme, SCBA has notified the following modalities:

A sum of Rs. 25,000/- to members having taxable income of 5 Lacs or more but less than Rs. 10 Lacs in any Assessment Years between 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

A sum of Rs. 50,000/- to members having taxable income of less than Rs. 5 Lacs in any Assessment Years between 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

(In the second category, if the ITR is not readily available, a self-declaration form may be attached clearly stating that the applicant's income is less than 5 lakh in any of the assessment years. However, in such case, an amount of Rs. 25,000/- will be disbursed immediately and the balance will be disbursed after due verification.)

Members availing the benefits under this scheme will have to produce 10 appearances between 2016-2021 in any of the calendar years or cumulative 15 appearances in any 2 years between 2016-2021.

However, in case the name of the member appears even once in the voter list between 2016-2020, such member is exempted from providing the appearances as mentioned hereinabove.
