Background:
In 2020, the Government of India embarked on an ambitious exercise of reforming the Criminal Justice System. In an attempt to decolonise the criminal justice administration system, on 11th August 2023, three bills titled Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill (BSB), 2023 seeking to repeal and replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively were introduced in the Parliament. From 1st July 2024, these laws have come into force.
About the Course:
This course is of 22-25 hours approximately. It endeavors to unpack the important procedural and practical changes introduced in Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. A mixed pedagogy will be adopted by our course instructor Mr. Namit Saxena, Advocate on Record at the Supreme Court of India and a criminal law practitioner based in Delhi and Rajasthan to share in detail about procedural criminal law and to instill critical thinking amongst the participants. The course will familiarize the participants with what has changed and what remains the same under new laws.
Course Objectives:
- To familiarize the participants with important changes brought to new procedural criminal law i.e. Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
- To enable the participants understand the impact of implementation of BNSS and the relevance of the CrPC on interpretation of new laws.
- To give a detailed practical exposure to participants on the entire criminal procedure starting from reporting of a crime to investigation to trial and appeals. Various interesting arenas of the procedural law will be discussed throughout the course.
Who can register for the course:
The Course is an ideal for students of law, academicians, practitioners and general public and law enthusiasts. However, it will be equally beneficial for Police Personnel, Lawyers and Law Students. It combines the theoretical study of Criminal Law with the Practical realities and implications. Students without prior knowledge of Criminal Law are also welcome since our course will comprehensively cover the procedure in a step-by-step manner to ensure that it is beginner-friendly.

Who will be your faculty:
Mr. Namit Saxena, Advocate on Record, Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, is an alumnus of National Law University, Lucknow who secured 2nd rank in AoR examination. Having served Hon'ble Justice Mr. Kurian Joseph as a Legal Research Assistant, his eminence in academia can clearly be seen in his popular editing works like CPC by Mulla, CPC by Ratanlal & Dhirajlal, Universal's Legal GK, Sarkar's Criminal Minor Acts, CrPC by Justice C.K. Prasad. His areas of interest include Arbitration Laws, Criminal Laws and Issues pertaining to Constitutional Laws. He has also recently authored a Concise Commentary on The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, published by Lexis Nexis India.
