Clampdown On Sand Mining: SC Directs Probe Into Illegal Sand Mining Activities Across Rajasthan

Collectors & SP's of every District of Rajasthan were also directed to take immediate steps to curb illegal sand mining in the state.

When a batch of pleas relating to sand mining were taken up by a Bench comprising CJI SA Bobde, Justices B.R. Gavai & Surya Kant, a poignant Petitioner-in-person stated that even though a ban had been imposed by the Courts on illegal sand mining in the State, it was evident that the illegalities were still prevalent.

"The Governments never stopped illegal mining in our state. BJP & Congress, both have been playing 20-20 cricket with people of the state. It is not a hidden fact that Bhu-mafias are very much prevalent in the state" urged the Petitioner.

At this juncture, the Petitioner requested the Bench to initiate an inquiry and direct the CEC to do so.

CJI SA Bobde reassured the Petitioner that the Court shall take these suggestions into consideration.

"It is not unknown that sand mining causes irreparable harm to the environment. If it is happening, we will issue directions look into it and take your suggestions" stated CJI SA Bobde

Sand Mining had been earlier banned vide a 2017 Judgment of the Supreme Court.

The batch petitions also prayed that those parties that had been granted Letters of Intent (LOI) be allowed to avail environmental clearance as already directed by the Supreme Court vide order dated 9^th May 2019.

Last year, the Supreme Court had directed that even though the banning shall continue on sand mining, the parties that had already been granted LOI's could apply for environmental clearances.
