Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave broke down crying while bidding farewell to CJI NV Ramana today. In the ceremonial bench, while many spoke on the work done by CJI Ramana and even referred to him as the member of their "family", Dave got emotional and while stating that he could no longer hold his emotions said that–
"You have been a citizens' judge...I cannot hold back my emotions today. You performed your duty with spine. You upheld the rights...you upheld the constitution...you maintained a system of checks and balances. You are leaving the court in great hands of Justice Lalit and Justice Kohli. We will miss you."
He stated that while he was scared when the CJI took over owing to "what the court had gone through", CJI Ramana lived beyond everybody's expectations. Dave, while crying, said that
"You maintained checks and balances and did it with a spine and utmost courtesy to the institution and the lawyers. You left this country with amazing constitutional morality and constitutional ethos. It has been a pleasure appearing before you. I genuinely felt it when I wrote that article in the Indian Express the day you took over that everything was lost. I may be very pessimistic but I have great satisfaction that your lordship is leaving the court in great hands of Justice Lalit."
He expressed his gratitude to CJI Ramana by stating that the "atmosphere and power" that the CJI had given to the institution would be carried on forward.
CJI Ramana is retiring today and held a ceremonial bench which was live streamed for the public to watch.
