The Allahabad High Court has directed the National Human Rights Commission to investigate into the alleged police violence in Aligarh Muslim University, during anti-CAA protests.

The order was passed by the bench of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Vivek Varma in the PIL filed by Mohd. Aman Khan against police action during an anti-CAA protest at AMU on December 15, 2019.

The Commission has been directed to complete the probe within 5 weeks and the matter has been listed for February, 17.

The Petitioner had moved the high court seeking a judicial inquiry by a 'Court Monitored Committee' against the acts of police brutality, whereby several students of AMU were injured and had been detained arbitrarily.

Khan had alleged that the students were protesting peacefully against the Citizenship Amendment Act since December 13, 2019. However, on December 15, 2019, the Para Military Force and the State Police, for no just and valid reasons, charged Lathi with massive amount of firing of Tear Gas, Rubber Bullets and Pellets on the students of AMU.

Earlier, the high court had directed the District Magistrate, Aligarh to ensure that all necessary medical assistance and aid is provided to the students and persons said to be injured in the alleged incident. It had reserved order in the matter on January 2.

The plea in high court was filed after the Supreme Court, on December 17, 2019, declined to entertain pleas seeking enquiry into police atrocities against University students. A bench headed by CJI SA Bobde had asked the petitioners to approach the concerned High Courts.

Notices have been issued by the Delhi High Court to the Central Government, Delhi Government and Delhi Police, seeking their replies in similar petitions filed against violence in Jamia.
