TNNLS Vice Chancellor Resigns, NLSIU Graduate IAS officer to take charge

All’s not well for Tamil Nadu National Law School (TNNLS) as Founder Vice Chancellor demits office citing lack of adequate support from some members of the Executive Council as reported by the Hindu. Murgavel who earlier served in the Department of Law of Madras University was one of the main architects of the newly established Tamil Nadu National Law School.  He has sent the resignation letter to the Chief Justice of Madras High Court, who is also the Chancellor of the School right after the State Government notification appointing Mr. Arun Roy a 2004 batch IAS officer servicing as Joint Secretary (Finance) in the State Secretariat. The law school located at Navalurkuttapatttu in Srirangam Assembly Constituency was established by the State government by enacting the Tamil Nadu Law School Act, 2012 was with the objective of establishing an NLU in the state. The State Government had contributed Rs.100 to the law school. It currently has 260 students and admissions for the new academic year are underway.

Confirming the resignation, Mr. Murugavel had toldThe Hindu that he pooled his professional and administrative experience to build the school from scratch since the day he assumed office. However, he could not get support from some Executive Council members. They could not accept the national recognition received by the Law School within a short span of time, he said.

The newly appointed Registrar is expected to take charge of the law school from next week. Mr. Roy is an alumnus of the National Law School of India University and had earlier served as managing director of Poompuhar Shipping Corporation. The post of registrar was earlier held by Soundarapandian S, an academic who was transferred to another government law college a month ago.
