The Madras High Court last week directed aspiring medical students to produce their Aadhaar cards and photocopies of the same at the time of counselling, in a bid to counter forged nativity certificates.

Justice N. Kirubakaran noted that several students were forging their nativity certificates, observing, “many students have applied for Medical admission both in Tamil Nadu as well as in other States, showing both the states as native state. But, there can be only one native state.

Even though there is a qualification for availing the benefits of native of two or more states, a person can choose only one state as native state and the candidates cannot apply for more than one State as native state.”

The Court further noted that in all the other States, the Aadhaar card needs to be provided in the application itself. It then highlighted the fact that production of Aadhaar cards would solve the issue, observing,

“To confirm that the genuine State candidates are benefited under the State quota, it is appropriate to make the production of Aadhar card and a photocopy of the same compulsory at the time of counselling.

By the said method, the students from other States could be prevented from getting the benefit under the State quota. Therefore, the respondents are directed to inform the candidates who have applied for the Medical admission to produce their Aadhar card and its photocopy at the time of admission.”

The authorities have now been directed to publish the requirement on the websites:  www.tnhealth.org  and www.tnmedicalselection.org. The same has to be published in the news within two days as well. Besides, the students are to be sent SMSs regarding the same, in order to keep them informed.

In addition, the State Government was also asked to furnish details of such students who have mentioned more than one State as their native State. The matter has been directed to be listed after two weeks.
