Both Centre and State of UP came under fire when the Supreme Court asked why CBI should not be investigating the alleged murder of journalist Jagender Singh in Shahjahanpur. The Court accordingly gave time of four weeks to Centre and State of UP to file a reply.
On June 1, Jagender Singh was allegedly set on fire by certain UP policemen when they had raided his house. The burns were so severe that Jagender Singh breathed his last on June 8, in Lucknow while undergoing treatment.
The journalist had written about the local MLA in the local newspapers and had accused him of illegal mining, occupation of land and several other nefarious activities.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had earlier said, "no injustice will be done with anyone". Now it is up to his government to tell the Court that why should the probe not be given to CBI, instead of UP Police.
