Live Law had earlier reported about an instance when senior advocate R Basant and his associate A Karthik were recently showered with praises by the Supreme Court when the duo declined to accept any remuneration for rendering assistance in mediating and settling a decade-old case.

In such a gracious gesture again, the senior advocate, who was also a high court judge, has declined remuneration after he made litigants Eveready Industries India Limited and Micro Small Enterprises Facilitation Council, Chennai Region, settle their disputes amicably.

The special leave petition in this regard before the apex court had been pending before it for four years now and the court had requested R Basant to mediate between the parties and explore the possibility of a settlement.

While disposing the SLP and recording the settlement, the bench comprising Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice R Banumathi observed: “Though Mr. R. Basant, learned senior counsel, was requested by the parties to accept some remuneration, learned senior counsel has graciously declined the request.”

The court then directed both the parties to pay Rs. 25,000 to the Supreme Court Bar Clerk's Association, within a month, which shall be equally shared between them.
