The Supreme Court has ordered provisional release of two convicts who suffered incarceration for about two decades.

A bench of Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Amitava Roy, while disposing two writ petitions, filed by Munna and Chidda Singh separately observed that pending further orders in the writ petition, the petitioners be released on bail on execution of a personal bond to the satisfaction of the Superintendent of Jail.

The bench observed: “Having regard to the fact that the petitioner has already completed more than 21(18) actual years of incarceration and with remission, around 28 (24) years in jail, we are of the view that the petitioner needs to be released from jail provisionally.” (Orders in both the writ petitions are similarly worded, the figure given in bracket corresponds to Munna).

Both of them were also directed by the bench to report to the respective SHO at his residential place every fortnight.
